NEWSLETTER Issue: 6.06
At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well!
The girls and boys with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.

YEAR 4 CRICKET COACHING
Year 4 have enjoyed 5 weeks of some great cricket coaching. First we did some fielding and catching, then some batting skills and to finish we learnt how to bowl. Our coach, Stuart, taught us some fantastic tactics to help us remember our moves. Then we had two phenomenal games where the standard had clearly risen. We did a catching competition every time. A few people got to go to the cricket club with Tom Baker, but those people had a lot of fun anyway!! In a few weeks we can’t wait to have a cricket festival. We would like to give thanks to our coach Stuart and everyone who has supported us.
By Alice, Thomas and Faizan.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE … LAST CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!
No doubt you have seen the posters around the school and in the local community advertising two coffee mornings next week: Monday 6th July and Wednesday 8th July. Each one starts in the Blue Room at 9.00 and finishes around 10.30am. This will be a chance to celebrate all our existing volunteers and the fabulous work they do. It will also be an opportunity to welcome potential volunteers and outline our ambitious plans for the future which will benefit our children but also enable us to better serve the community. If you want to offer your help in any way, come along to one of the mornings!
THANK YOU ………
to everyone who donated old logo school uniform to the Ragbag Project! The sweatshirts are being laundered and parcelled up to send off to a children’s charity based in South Africa. Homestead is a charity for street children, who call in, have their first shower in months, a set of clean clothes and a meal, before they go back on the streets to try and find somewhere to sleep that night. Julian and Kirsty, who run the charity, also ask people to collect up the small sample soaps and shampoos. If anyone has a collection of these stashed away at home and would like to add them to the parcel, please see Hala Langan (Meg’s Mum 2B) asap.
WELL DONE!
Thank you to all the children from 1R who helped at last week’s Curriculum Evening. You did a fantastic job – well done!

PUPIL PARLIAMENT
On Monday 29th June, Hannah (3H) and Joseph (4W) went to Bath Spa University to take part in a Pupil Parliament. It was the first of its kind. When we got there we went to the theatre and we got split into four groups. Newbridge were in Twiverton 101 with a number of other schools and one by one we went up and presented our ideas to the other schools. Once all the schools had presented their ideas each person had to vote on who they thought should present their ideas in the theatre later on and Newbridge were voted through. When we presented our ideas in the big theatre sadly we didn’t get voted in. The idea that was voted highest was a very good idea, so although it wasn’t our idea we were very pleased. We would like to thank Mr Cumpson for taking us.
By Joseph
(‘This is a first for Newbridge and all Bath Schools. The Council, in conjunction with the University, are hoping to hold two of these children’s parliaments a year so that our children’s voice is heard and acted upon. Well done to Joseph, Hannah and Mr Cumpson on being such fantastic representatives!’ Mr Croker)
TAG RUGBY REPORT
On Saturday 27th June Newbridge Tag Rugby team went to the Recreation Ground to play rugby. In the morning we played lots of warm ups with Paulton Juniors and in the afternoon we played matches. We played St Mary’s first and we won, then we played St Nicholas Primary which we also won. For our last match we played Saltford but sadly we lost 7-6. We were supposed to play one more match against St Phillip’s but we ran out of time. If we had won that we would have come top of our group. It was the end of the tournament and we won 2 games.
By Rhys 3H
(‘ Our squad of twelve Year 3 and 4 players were amazing. With only two practice sessions under their belts they went on to play at least as well as the Lions! They played with great spirit and togetherness which was matched by the support from all our fantastic supporters. It was a pleasure to spend the day with them all.’ Mr Croker)
NPSA NEWS – Summer Fete Special
Newbridge Summer Fete – Saturday 11th July 2.00pm – 4.30pm
Summer is upon us and the fete is fast approaching and hopefully the good weather will continue! It should be a great day, what with the competitions, cream teas, bouncy castle obstacle course, barbecue, magician, penalty shootout, events and all the other fantastic stalls! It should also be an affordable afternoon as we have kept the prices low with most games priced at 20 pence and lots of free activities such as Bryan the Magician and all the events and displays!
Now, to the important bit! This is the event, more than any other, which needs the support of the whole school to be successful. And, I am afraid that we are yet again going to ask you to donate your goods and time! Thank you to all who have already volunteered to help run a stall but we still have some stalls yet to find an owner! Here is a list:
Treasure Map
Lose your Marbles
Flying Saucers
The Egg Game
Face paints
New books
If you are able to volunteer by yourself or with a group of families, then please pop a note in the NPSA tray, email npsa@hotmail.co.uk. If you are put off because you do not know what these games are – don’t be! They are all set up and ready to run and all very straightforward! So, please come forward!
We also need an army of helpers on the Friday before the fete to help label up the tombolas, wrap the lucky dip etc. If you can help, please come along to the Blue Room on the morning of Friday the 10th July.
As you are aware without all your kind donations, events like the Summer Fete could not happen – so please keep them coming in!
Here is a list of what each year group is being asked to contribute:
Years 2, 4 and 6 – Sweetie Jars (You should find these in your book-bags next week. Please fill them! No nuts please.)
Years 1, 3 and 5 – Chocolate for the Chocolate Tombola (No nuts please.)
Reception – Plain scones or a jar of strawberry jam (This would be a great contribution for our cream teas! Home made or shop bought! No nuts please.)
In addition, Friday 10th July is Mufti Day and in exchange for wearing mufti we are asking the whole school to bring a tombola prize for the adult tombola. For example, a bottle of wine, an alcoholic beverage, some nice olive oil, a box of chocolates, some special biscuits, a particularly nice chutney etc.
So, where do you have to bring all these goodies? Well, we would like you to bring them in on Friday the 10th July – the day before the fete and bring them to the Blue Room. If you do not drop-off on a Friday then bring them in anytime next week and leave them in reception.
I would also like to put out an appeal for any toys or books you are getting rid of. If they are in good condition, please bring them to school any time next week and there will be a box waiting to receive them outside reception. They will find a good home on the second-hand stall at the fete! Both adult and children’s books gratefully received!
Thank you in advance for all your kind donations. In a week when the builders have started work on the adventure play trail, it really shows how much good your kind support does. Bringing in goodies and volunteering to run stalls really does make a difference to our children’s education!

Come along to one of our coffee mornings on Monday 6th July or Wednesday 8th July, or register an interest at the office if you cannot make those dates (FAO: Tony Day), to find out if you can support our children and whether we can support you!
WELL DONE TO…….
Ø The Year 6 children who performed in ‘The Witches’ at the Egg Theatre last weekend. This was a collaborative venture with Southdown Juniors and Hayesfield Secondary School and the first time we have been involved in this venture. Congratulations girls and boys!
Ø All our Year 5 and 6 tour guides during this week’s Open Day. Record numbers came through our doors and extra reinforcements had to be called! It comes as no surprise that they all did the school proud. The Visitors’ Book is crammed with compliments about them and the school.
Ø The Year 3 and 6 children who were involved at the Techlink project held at the University of Bath last week. While the Year 6 team of Sydney, Joda, Tom, Emily and Finlay were building very fast cars and testing them against other schools, the Year 3 team of William, Ben, Jenny, Abigail, Indie and Luke were giving a brilliant presentation to a large audience about their CAD CAM project using 2D Design.
Ø .. and thank you to everyone who came to our book sale in Class 1R. We raised £31.32 for the school.
ABLE, GIFTED AND TALENTED SURVEY

YEAR 5 KWIK CRICKET TOURNAMENT
On Tuesday 9th June Newbridge A team went to the Sulis Club to play a Year 5 Kwik Cricket Tournament. The team got off to a great start by thrashing Trinity with a massive 58 run victory. The next game was against St Michaels. We won that with a great batting performance from Tom and Callum. Our next game was against St Phillips. Their last pair almost took glory away from us but great bowling and fielding meant we snatched a 15 run victory. The next game we played was a real toughie. Our new tactic nearly cost us dearly but some great last pair batting by the two Izzy’s, including a powerful 4 hit by Izzy L, meant we just got away with the poor tactics and we won. That meant we won the group stage and were in the cup semi-finals. In the semi-finals our game was against Moorlands. Tom opened the bowling and got a hat trick on the first 3 balls and set us on our way. More wickets from Jack and Olli meant they only got 206 (you start on 200 and lose 5 runs for every wicket.) Tom’s dramatic switch shot for 6 ended the innings. We had won our semi-final and were through to the Final!!! We were against the team which had won the title 4 years running, Bathwick St Mary’s. We unfortunately only scored 218 and lost the final. We were disappointed but we held our heads high. We will represent the school in the County Finals in July. We would like to thank Mr Cumpson for organising the day and all the parents who came and supported us. (‘Congratulations to our cricketers & Mr Cumpson. Good luck in the final! A brilliant article too.’ Mr Croker)
GIRLS’ CRICKET TOURNAMENT
Well done to those girls who took part in the BANES Cricket Tournament on Tuesday 16th June. We had a wonderful afternoon, with all 17 girls playing some great cricket. We took an A and B team, with each team playing games against St Stephen’s. Kingswood, Paragon, St Andrew’s and St Michael’s. The A team won 3 out of their 4 games whilst the B team won 2 and lost 2. In the play-offs our B team came 5th overall and the A team came 4th, losing by only 8 runs! All the girls behaved superbly and encouraged their team mates all afternoon. As one of our parents commented “the enthusiasm is a joy to see”.
Well done everybody, yet again I was incredibly proud of your behaviour, organisation and support for each other. Thanks also to all those parents who help transport the girls to the venue. A special thank you to Mrs Marshall who was team manager for the A team! Mrs Bartlett.
(‘Well done, girls, for demonstrating the right approach on and off the field. Thank you too to Mrs Bartlett, Mrs Marshall and our drivers.’ Mr Croker)
ART WEEK UPDATE – HELP NEEDED!
We are very excited about the projects that the children will be working on during Art Week – 29th June – 3rd July, and with so much going on we really need some extra help with two particular activities. You don’t need to be artistic!
We need a team of CRB checked parents to work with small groups of Lower School children to support their painting of the Lower School mural. If you are available any time during Art Week we would be very pleased to hear from you.
In addition, two of our parent artists are working with the Year 6 children producing a mural in the Upper School. This is a big project and they would really appreciate some adult help with this.
If you are at all available to assist with either of these projects then please pass your name to Miss Higginbotham or Mr Baigent, or speak to Carol Hinton or Jane Callan. We would be really grateful for any help! Many thanks, Anna Higginbotham and Paulo Baigent.

It could be about anything from tying shoelaces to baking a cake! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ensure these folders are returned on Monday. Thank you.
LITERACY WEEK
Literacy Week has been a great success and enjoyed by all – children and staff! Thank you to everyone who has helped in any way; to staff and students, to Lesley Waters and her team of helpers for organising the hot chocolate at Book at Bedtime, to the School Association for funding Storybox Theatre, to Ishbel Tovey for helping run the Book Fair and last but not least, to the children for joining in with such enthusiasm! Many thanks, Di Rhodes.
(‘We would also like to thank Mrs Rhodes for organising an excellent week. She has put a lot of hard work into this to make it so memorable and enjoyable for us all.’ Mr Croker)

THANK YOU!
The Kitchen staff and Breakfast Club staff would like to thank Mr Andy Lawrence, dad of Isha in Willow class, for donating and delivering a freezer this week. We have been looking for one for a long time. This will be a great help for lots of different things.

Well done to Sydney who has achieved a place at the Regional Multi-Skill Academy. She is one of only eight pupils to make it through from BANES so it is a great achievement.

Preparations for the fair are well under way and we are pleased to announce that as well as an events ring and a competition tent - there will be a magician, a bouncy castle obstacle course, a penalty shoot-out, cream teas and Mr Croker in the stocks! Please feel free to volunteer on your own or with a team of families. You will need to be at the school in time to set up, run and clear up on the day of the fair. We really are in need of volunteers so please come forward and help us reach our £3000 target for the adventure playground and have some fun at the same time! We are particularly in need of families to run the barbecue. It would be great if, say, a team of fathers (or mothers for that matter!) could get together, bring along their barbecues and cook up a feast!
Summer Fair Poster Competition
We are thrilled to announce that Elise Preedy from 1H has won the poster competition. You will all be able to see what a fantastic job she has done when the posters go up around the school and in the community! Well done Elise!
A special mention must go to our runner-up, Isobel Parker Year 5, who also came up with a fantastic design!
Wanted!
Four things this week!
- Does anyone out there have a sewing machine they no longer need which they would be willing to donate to the school? It would make making costumes for our up-coming productions much easier!
- If you have a CD player you no longer need the school would be very grateful!
- Gazebos and party tents. It would be great if you could bring these to the summer fair and put them up for us!
- Ice boxes – Thanks to Susan Whitehead we now have a freezer to store ice-creams in! Thank you! But it would be great if we could get hold of a few ice boxes to take the ice-creams onto the field in!
If you can help please pop a note in the NPSA tray in reception or send an email to npsa@hotmail.co.uk. Thank you!
Ice-creams
These will be on sale after school from Friday 19th June - every Friday until the end of term! So bring your money and make your way to the field!

NEWSLETTER Issue: 6.01
Welcome back after what I hope was a scorching half term break in every sense! This beautiful weather heralds the start of an exciting eight weeks leading up to the summer break with so much to look forward to. Our Year 6 children and staff team are currently in the Isle of Wight on their residential trip. They are having a wonderful time and representing our school in such a way that makes us feel proud to be a part of Newbridge Primary. They will all certainly sleep well this weekend!
Exciting news of the adventure / fitness trail to be built where the old Year 3 double mobile was situated……….work is due to start on our new trail the week beginning 22nd June and it is estimated that it will take two weeks to complete. We are moving fast on this so that our Year 6 children, in particular, have a chance to use it before they leave. Our children have had a say in the design and we are all really excited about the opportunities for play and exercise it will bring in the coming years. However, we are going ahead still needing £3000 and this is where we need every last penny from the Summer Fair and any fund raising leading up to it! Our superb NPSA and school community will, we are sure, make it happen so all your support for the activities outlined in the NPSA news at the end of this and every newsletter is much appreciated.
I hope the following words do not bring a premature end to the summer but here goes! We reminded the children earlier this week about the importance of wearing a hat in such strong sunshine as they have the option of playing on the field at lunchtime and there is not too much shade. We have said that, as regards the field, ‘no hat, no play’ so your help in ensuring that your child always has a hat available, as well as a water bottle, is appreciated. We have school hats for sale and they can be bought at the school office from Lesley Waters at 3.15pm. Please note later in this newsletter, some reminders about uniform and PE kit. Next week Literacy Week!

Don’t forget to come along to the next coffee morning on Monday! (Please note change of venue). Not only will you be able to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee but homemade biscuits and cookies will be on sale! Everyone is welcome and the more the merrier – so please come along and join the fun!
NPSA Committee Meeting – Monday 8th June - Blue Room: 7.30pm
If you have been to one of these meetings before – please come along and if you haven’t come along too! Our school association can only become stronger by more parents and carers getting involved – there is room for everyone! The meeting will begin at 7.30pm promptly.
Summer Fair - Saturday 11th July: 2.00pm - 4.30pm
A big thank you to all those children who entered the poster competition! We will be bringing you the results in next week’s newsletter! Your school needs you!
We thought it would be nice to try something new and get families involved more closely in the running of the fair. So how do you and your family fancy taking on a stall! This would involve setting up, manning and clearing up, so we suggest you share the task with another family or families depending on the stall. So, next week we will be publishing a list of the stalls and asking you to volunteer! Alternatively, if you have an idea for a stall which you feel confident that you could develop and run please let us know. Any ideas and help are always welcome!
Raffle
We are hoping to put together a really outstanding raffle this year with some great prizes but to do so we would really appreciate your help! So, if any of you can think of any prizes we can get our hands on, then please grab them for us! Or maybe you work for or run a business which could offer us a prize. If you do not wish to ask them yourselves give us the details and we will make the approach. The raffle tickets will be available in advance this year as well as on the day, giving you more of an opportunity to win those fabulous prizes!
Cake Sale
A big thank you to all of those who provided cakes for the sale at the end of the last term! And an equally big thank you to those who helped organize it! I am pleased to announce that we made an impressive £200!
(‘Thank you so much to the NPSA and all who organised and supported this and our other cake sales – we think you are brilliant!’ Mr Croker)

NEWSLETTER Issue: 5.05
Half term is here after a very fast five weeks! The last two weeks have seen Year 6 SATs take place, with Year 2 SATs taking place over a longer period. Our other children, from Year 1 upwards, have also had their assessments so that we can track their progress and ensure we are meeting their needs. As well as ongoing teacher assessment, we carry out these more formal assessments every six months throughout the children’s time at Newbridge and the outcomes of these very much inform the Reports coming out to you later this term. As you know, the future of Year 6 SATs in their current format is uncertain but what is certain is the attitude of the vast majority of our children towards their learning. We are so impressed with their desire to do their very best and we cannot ask for more than that! Huge credit goes to all the staff too for leaving no stone unturned to help the children be the best that they can be.
Sadly, we say farewell to Adam (2B) and Andrea (1H) who move to Peasedown St John Primary and Longwell Green Primary respectively. They both live quite a long way from our school and it will be so much easier for them and their families now. Both are delightful children and we will miss them very much, as we do Thomas (4W) who left us very recently and is settling in well at the Paragon. We wish them all the very best in the future.
You will find attached the first Governor Newsletter in our brief history! This newsletter will come out three or four times a year and is a step towards achieving our aim of bringing the governors and school community closer together. We hope you enjoy it and well done to Victoria Janseunne, our Chair of Governors, for making it happen.
I hope you all have an excellent half term break. For my part, I am hoping to do a spot of camping with the family …..fingers crossed for that heatwave!

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE
At the end of every month each class teacher has a very difficult decision to face. They have to choose the one person from their class to receive a Certificate of Excellence. The person they choose has to consistently be the best that he or she can be. That could be in effort and attitude, achievement, behaviour or citizenship. Sometimes it can be very difficult deciding as all of the children at Newbridge seem to work so hard and behave so well!
The girls and boys with their names here this month deserve congratulating. It is not easy to be awarded a Certificate of Excellence and they have done extremely well.

PERIPATETIC MUSIC LESSONS
The deadline for showing an interest in learning one of the musical instruments at school from September was today. During the first two weeks back after half-term the peripatetic staff will be testing those children interested to see if they like the instrument and if they are able to play it. The teachers will be taking children out on the following days:
Monday - drums, guitars
Tuesday - brass
Wednesday - cellos
Thursday - violins
Friday - flutes
If there are any children who would like to start to learn an instrument from September, who have missed the deadline, then please notify the office before the relevant day, as shown above. Once the children have been tested, all children will be sent a letter to inform of fees and confirmation of lessons to be carried out.
Keyboard lessons are taught separately by Mrs Houston. There is currently a waiting list for lessons and so Mrs Houston will let all children know when there are spaces available.
If you have any other queries about peripatetic music lessons please see me as soon as possible. Miss Amies

Great fun was had by all of those who attended last Friday’s disco which raised a very respectable £450 towards the playground equipment for the Upper School. I would like to thank Steph Massie, Lisa Lansdown and Andy Lawrence for organising the event, Stewart Taylor for supplying the drinks(which certainly helped get people on the dance floor) and Kelvin Rogers for helping him run the bar. Thank you to the class reps for selling the tickets and to Nigel Lansdown, Richard Burton, Anna Whitson and Julian Massie for turning the hall into a disco venue! And, finally, a big thank you to Paulo Baigent for the music and everyone who came along and danced late into the night!
Summer Fete – Saturday July 11th: 2.00pm - 4.30pm

NEWSLETTER Issue: 5.04
Please see the attached letter from Miss Higginbotham and Mr Baigent about an Arts Week we are holding the week beginning 29th June. We have added this week to the original calendar. We are really excited by the art work that we see on a daily basis and we are looking forward to celebrating our children’s creativity and talents during that week. We have a number of very artistic parents too and their support for that week, as well as ongoing projects, such as art club and the upper school cloakroom mural, is greatly appreciated.
QUESTIONNAIRES
The feedback you provide in the questionnaires we send out is invaluable and genuinely informs our development planning for the future. We are also aware of questionnaire and survey ‘burnout’ and, with this in mind, we are moving to a two yearly cycle of the full parental questionnaire. We have your input from the last two years to inform our planning and the next one will be sent out in the summer of 2010. We are going to carry out a survey of pupil views this summer and will continue to alternate with the parental questionnaire in the coming years. Now, that’s not to say our parents and carers get off ‘scot free’! We do need your views on particular aspects of our development plan. A little while ago, for example, our Foundation Stage parents were asked for their views on the induction process and the feedback they gave us very much informed the current arrangements. There are two more short questionnaires coming out over the next six months. One is related to the transition process for children moving from one year to the next within the school. This review is being led by Mrs Bartlett and the other is our provision for the gifted, able and talented which is being led by Mr Hempleman. As always the time you take on these is appreciated and they do make a difference in the future.

CELEBRATING WRITING
Lily – 4W
One night Amir, who was the son of the richest Brahmin in town, was going home and he saw a small, tatty girl with no shoes. When he looked a bit closer he saw she was crying. So Amir decided to tip-toe over to her.
“What are you doing out here when you could be in your warm house?” he asked.
“My name is Tara, I am an orphan. I do not have a house that I can shelter in and I am very hungry.” The girl replied.
“My name is Amir. I will show you a field full of ripe yellow bananas, you can eat there” whispered Amir, so no-one would know that he was stealing. So Amir took her by the hand and showed her to the banana field. It was gorgeous, rows and rows of ripe, lush, yellow bananas, glinting in the soft moonlight.
After a big and delicious meal, Amir decided to sneak into the farmers house and get some water to wash it down.
“No”, shouted Tara as he walked towards the house, “he will catch you and beat you up”.
“He won’t” answered Amir.
So Tara went and hid behind a big green bush to see what would happen. Suddenly Amir came rushing out with the angry farmer chasing him. Soon enough he caught Amir and beat him with a stick. Slowly but cautiously he dragged himself over to where Tara was hiding.
“Ha, ha, ha” shouted Tara, “you got what you deserve”.
So Amir and Tara walked back to the Banyan tree.
Moral: Trust your friends.
Will – 4P
One day on a hot and humid farm in the forest, a man called Amit, selfish and greedy, lived in a small hut with his animals. He needed a water buffalo to plough his fields. He bought an extremely enormous buffalo. Amit took him to a field and cried to the buffalo, “Get a move on!” It went on like this for a couple of weeks, the buffalo felt tired and lonely.
Amit didn’t let any other people see the buffalo. One day, in the afternoon, the buffalo broke through the cage that he was captured in. Quickly, in the commotion, the buffalo charged over Amit. Amit died a few days later. Before he died he whispered, “I should have not been so selfish.” The end.
FOOTBALL REPORT
On Thursday 7th May Newbridge Football team played Paulton. We got off to a great start when Oscar played the ball to Joe who had a stunning shot which hit the cross bar. Jacob ran down the wing and got fouled and won a free kick and shot and the keeper hit it out and Joe headed it into the box. Paulton suddenly had a counter attack and Jake cleared it to Tom and he played a ball to Jacob but they cleared it. Jacob took the throw in and Joe headed it but the keeper saved it. In the second half Jacob and Joe had great pressure and they lost the ball. Jacob passed to Joe and he played a beautiful ball through to Harry and he slotted it in. Joe then passed the ball to Jacob and he smashed it but it hit the crossbar. Suddenly Paulton came back with two goals and Newbridge lost the match 2-1. We would like to thank Mr Cumpson and everyone else for supporting us. By Jacob, Joe and Max.

No text as this will be added later. Entry is encouraged from all years at the school from Reception through to Year 6. The theme of this year’s fair is Newbridge Summer Fete and we are hoping to create an old-fashioned feel to the day. The winning entrant will have their artwork turned into a poster which will be displayed all over Bath! So, get out your pens and paper, paints and brushes and be creative! All entries should be placed in a special competition box in Main Reception which will be there from Monday 1st June. The deadline is before registration on Friday 5th June. Thank you and Good Luck!
